Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department Henry Yeh was named Outstanding Engineering Educator by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 6, which represents the western United States.

Yeh, who organizes and chairs the IEEE Green Energy and Smart Systems Conference (IGESSC) on campus, won for his contributions in the areas of green energy, smart systems and digital signal processing.

The IGESSC is an annual event that has been hosted by CSULB for the past decade. It was held at the Walter Pyramid this year on Nov. 4.

ASI Feeds a Need

Hundreds of volunteers gathered in the CSULB Student Recreation and Wellness Center to pack 10,000 meals for food insecure students.

The event was organized by Associated Students, Inc. and Generosity Feeds, a nonprofit that helps host meal creation events across the nation. ASI, through its Food Pantry and Feed a Need programs, works to address food insecurity within the student population on campus.

The national championship will be held next January in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

One for the books

Assistant sociology professor Dr. Jan Haldipur co-won this year’s Goddard Riverside Stephan Russo Book Prize for Social Justice.

His book, “No Place on the Corner: The Costs of Aggressive Policing,” draws from three years of fieldwork and examines the impact of policing tactics on neighborhood residents. The other book that was recognized with the award, “An American Summer: Love and Death in Chicago,” was written by Alex Kotlowitz and chronicles impacts of shootings in Chicago.

The two books share the prize because they are both complementary to each other, said Douglas Bauer who chairs the judges’ panel.

Haldipur’s research explores inequality in the criminal justice system. Before coming to Cal State Long Beach, Haldipur worked at a prisoner reentry program where he studied barriers to employment among formerly incarcerated men and women.
