American MONUMENT
September 17 – December 9, 2018
From September 16 through December 9, 2018, artist lauren woods planned to transform the University Art Museum (UAM) into a monument that prompted consideration of the cultural circumstances under which African-Americans have lost their lives to police brutality. The new-media artwork was meant to assist the public in analysis of the complex relationship between constructed race, material violence and structural power. American MONUMENT was “paused” at the request of the artist, however, the UAM welcomed visitors to come and contemplate the project in its limited scope. Remaining visual materials legal documents mounted in the galleries associated with the cases of the untimely deaths of Laquan MacDonald, Trayvon Martin, and Michael Brown.
