Brooke Winder
Dr. Brooke Winder, Associate Professor, teaches dance science courses including Functional Anatomy, Quantitative Analysis of Injuries, Pilates, and Functional Movement Assessment in Dance. She is coordinator of the Dance Science degree program, a licensed physical therapist, and a BASI-certified Pilates instructor.
Dr. Winder holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Southern California and a BFA in Dance from Chapman University. She is a certified Pilates instructor through Body Arts and Science International. Dr. Winder possesses a diverse background as a dancer and performer that informs her unique perspective and passionate focus on dancer health, wellness, and injury prevention. Originally a competitive gymnast, Dr. Winder transitioned into training in modern and contemporary dance, with foundations in Graham, Horton and release technique prior to her BFA studies. After earning her BFA at Chapman University, she performed professionally with Orange County-based Backhausdance. Her great interest in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and movement science led her from her performance career into the physical therapy profession. Dr. Winder is currently a practicing physical therapist who has treated a wide variety of orthopedic patients, including dancers of all ages. She is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in Physical Therapy, having completed a rigorous post-professional residency in orthopedic physical therapy with the University of Southern California where she mentored with top physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Winder also has specialized training in pelvic floor rehabilitation and maintains practice in the Orange County area in both orthopedics and pelvic health.

Dr. Winder’s research interests center on the investigation of ways to mitigate dance injuries and optimize dance performance. Specifically, she explores pelvic floor and related dysfunction in dancers and other performing artists.
Dr. Winder is currently a Research Committee Member of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Orthopedic Section Performing Arts Special Interest Group (PASIG). She has also served on leadership for the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science, and is an active member of the Performing Arts Medicine Association.
