Duncan Anderson Design Lecture Series
Spring 2025
Now Speaking
Through the years, the Duncan Anderson Design Lecture Series has invited top professionals to share their knowledge and experience with design students at CSULB. This coming year marks the expansion of that series to a bi-monthly event. Thanks to Cecelia Anderson-Malcolm and the Duncan Anderson Endowment, CSULB now has an ongoing design lecture series to rival those at private design schools. The CSULB Industrial Design Program is working closely with IDSA-LA, and its student chapters, to schedule an exciting line-up of speakers. Please let your chapter officers know of professionals you want to meet and hear at future events.
If you're interested in attending, please contact this year's Guest Speaker Coordinator, Wesley Woelfel or the department for the specific Zoom ID.

The Art of Spatial Storytelling:
Creating Experiences That
Engage and Inspire
Thursday, January 30, 7:00pm
CSULB Department of Design, Duncan Anderson Gallery
Experiential design goes beyond aesthetics, focusing on creating immersive environments that
connect people to a story. By engaging the senses and emotions, spatial design can evoke powerful,
lasting memories, making the space itself a storyteller. This lecture will explore how to craft meaning-
ful narratives through spatial experiences that engage, inspire, and leave a lasting impact on audi-
ences.
Aida Ohadi is a Spatial Experience Designer with over 7 years of experience in crafting immersive
environments for exhibitions, trade shows, conferences, permanent installations, concerts, festivals,
and branded pop-ups. A storyteller at heart, Aida specializes in creating environments that engage
the senses and evoke deep emotional connections.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Design from California State University, Long Beach, Aida pursued
advanced studies with a Master of Science in Spatial Experience Design from ArtCenter College of
Design. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to designing thoughtful, intentional spaces
that go beyond aesthetics—creating experiences that resonate profoundly with audiences.
With a keen focus on the intersection of design and human experience, Aida’s work transcends
visual appeal to engage all senses, resulting in transformative, unforgettable environments. She is
passionate about the role of spatial design in storytelling, aiming to spark emotion and engagement
in every space she creates.

How pop-up stores
reinvent brands: Insights
from four success cases
in South Korea
Thursday, March 20, 7:00pm
CSULB Department of Design, Duncan Anderson Gallery
As traditional retail declines, pop-up stores are emerging as transformative tools for brands seeking to re-
shape consumer perceptions. This lecture explores four successful pop-up stores in South Korea, including
Pachinko by Apple TV+, that effectively connected with consumers through immersive experiences. By ana-
lyzing real-world data such as visitor engagement, Instagram traction, and sales performance, I will illustrate
how temporary retail spaces help brands shift brand perceptions. Students will gain a deeper understanding
of how pop-up stores influence brand renewal and why they are becoming essential in today’s retail land-
scape.
Jaewoo Joo is a Professor in the Department of Marketing at the College of Business Administration, Kook-
min University. He also serves as a Participating Professor in the Product Service System Design Lab within
the Department of Smart Experience Design at the Graduate School of Techno Design. Jaewoo earned his
Ph.D. in Marketing from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and holds an M.B.A. and
B.A. from Seoul National University. During his doctoral studies in Canada, he became deeply engaged with
two human-centered approaches, design thinking and behavioral economics, as a means to address the
limitations of conventional marketing strategies. Positioned at the intersection of design and business, Jae-
woo applies a human-centered perspective across his research, teaching, and industry collaborations. His
interdisciplinary approach spans diverse publication outlets, courses, and corporate partnerships, fostering a
