The Advancing Nutrition Development through Alliances for Education and Leadership (ÁNDALE) Scholars Program aims to support undergraduate students in nutrition, health sciences, and kinesiology at CSULB and CSUMB. The purpose of the program is to enhance academic and professional training by harnessing the expertise and mentorship of highly productive faculty leaders. The ÁNDALE Scholars Program will promote an environment to support diverse students with mentorship, training, and research experiences that will optimize their success in the professional and scientific workforce.

Criteria

Participants must meet the following criteria:

  1. First generation educated (parents/legal guardians do not hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S.-based university or college)
  2. Spanish language fluency desired
  3. Multicultural
  4. Sophomores or new student standing
  5. Minimum GPA of 3.0 (Passed science courses with at least a B)

Components

Activities

The ÁNDALE Scholars Program is designed to recruit, enroll, and retain diverse undergraduates for a 38-week program (two 16-week semesters and 6 weeks in summer) to engage students in:

  1. Educational activities to increase nutrition and health science knowledge
  2. Experiential learning opportunities with faculty mentor and by completing an externship with a partner organization
  3. Professional development activities including a scholar learning community; and
  4. On-going mentoring to successfully complete all program activities.

Trainings and Webinars

Scholars will be required to attend six (6) annual competence-based trainings, facilitated by the faculty mentors and presented either in-person or via webinars.

Course enrollment

Scholars will be required to enroll in two (2) courses to improve their knowledge in nutrition, health sciences, and their ability to prepare research papers and presentations.

  1. HSC 333 Latino Nutrition, Health and Chronic Disease Prevention course
  2. HSC 407 Health Equity and Health Disparities Research in the U.S. course

Learning Community

Provide ÁNDALE scholar cohorts with professional development training through a monthly scholar learning community meeting where nutrition-related research and career planning will be discussed.

Long Term Goal #1:

Increase the number of multicultural, underrepresented, first generation educated students graduating in the nutrition, health sciences, and kinesiology disciplines at CSULB and CSUMB.

ObjectivesGoals

  1. Recruit a total of twenty-six (26) sophomore-level or entering transfer-level undergraduate, multicultural, first generation-educated students to participate as ÁNDALE scholars. Thirteen (13) students will be selected from CSULB and thirteen (13) from CSUMB in annual cohorts of seven (6-7) at each institution.
  2. Maintain a 90% student retention rate across all years.
  3. A minimum of 90% of ÁNDALE scholars will obtain a related degree within three years of participation as a scholar.

Long Term Goal #2:

Increase the knowledge of ÁNDALE scholars in nutrition and health sciences to prepare graduates entering the professional agriculture workforce.

ObjectivesGoals

  1. Enroll ÁNDALE scholars into two (2) courses in nutrition and health science.
  2. Provide six (6) monthly trainings/webinars to ÁNDALE scholar cohorts on nutrition, health, and community based participatory research methodology.
  3. Provide ÁNDALE scholar cohorts with professional development training through a monthly scholar learning community meeting where nutrition-related research and career planning will be discussed.

Long Term Goal #3:

Increase the capacity of ÁNDALE scholars to apply human nutrition knowledge in professional settings.

ObjectivesGoals

  1. Provide ÁNDALE scholar cohorts with experiential learning opportunities including a summer externship placement with community partners to engage in nutrition-related community-based participatory research and application.
  2. Provide ÁNDALE scholar cohorts with mentorship from experienced faculty and research staff to help with development of the scholars’ skills through regular meetings, trainings, involvement in the mentor’s research, and supervision during the externship placement.
