Guidance for Faculty & Staff
Please familiarize yourself with steps to take if you or a colleague are approached by federal law enforcement on campus:
- Inform the officer that you are not obstructing their process, but that you do not have the authority to respond to their request.
- Direct the officer to Administration and Finance in Brotman Hall 320. Please make sure to report the interaction to your supervisor, director, AVP or dean.
- If the officer does not accept the referral, contact your supervisor, director, AVP or dean. If you are unable to resolve the matter, contact University Police at 562-985-4101.

Additional background
CSULB is a public university, and a large portion of our campus is open to the general public. The campus areas open to the general public, like the campus quad and walkways, are also open to federal immigration enforcement officers. However, immigration officers should not enter areas that are not open to the general public, such as residence halls, classrooms while class is in session, confidential meeting rooms and spaces, or employee offices, unless the officer presents a valid judicial warrant or declares that exigent circumstances exist. (Exigent circumstances are emergency situations that would allow immigration officers to enter a location without a judicial warrant.) (See FAQ No. 2) If immigration enforcement officers declare exigent circumstances, or enter nonpublic spaces without permission, do not interfere or obstruct them. Instead, immediately contact University Police at 562-985-4101.
If an immigration enforcement officer approaches you to gain access to a nonpublic area of the university campus, or to obtain confidential student or employee records with or without a warrant, do not voluntarily grant access. Instead, respectfully inform the officer that you lack authority but will immediately contact the appropriate office. Then, refer them to Brotman Hall 320, and designated staff will review all immigration enforcement documents. If the officer persists and further attempts to gain access, contact University Police at 562-985-4101.
