Dance Studios:

The Dance Center at CSULB boasts seven spacious dance studios. Each studio is equipment with ballet bars, advanced audio and video capabilities, and tons of natural light. Studios 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 have Marley Dance Flooring and Studios 5 & 6 have hardwood to allow for dance forms like Hip-Hop which may require shoes. Studio 5 is the only space allowed for tap dancing. The dance studios are available for rentals.

Studio 3 Performance Space:

Studio 3 is equipped with LED Stage Lighting and multiple cameras for streaming of informal performances. This space also includes white sound panels that are appropriate for projection work. Studio 3's Performance Space is ideal for students and faculty presenting works in progress or hosting informal dance concerts.

Studio 7's Classroom:

Studio 7 offers both a classroom and studio space for classes that are equal parts lecture and movement. With a built-in smart audio/video system integrating a bright HD projector, Studio 7 offers a wonderful learning environment for our Dance Science and Music for Dance classes.

Pilates Lab:

Our Dance Science track has a Pilates Lab where students can exercise and learn about the body.

With a capacity of 230 seats and a large stage perfect for dance, the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater is the ideal location for intimate dance performance opportunities, film screenings, or meetings/presentations.

Other Amenities:

  • Green Room for performers
  • Large dressing rooms for men and women
  • Two star dressing rooms
  • Clean and expansive lobby
  • State of the art video projection and sound

Located on Atherton Street, between the Walter Pyramid and Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

CSULB Dance majors/minors have access to our Dance Clinic and the support of Head Athletic Trainer John Siegel. The Dance Clinic facility provides students with space and equipment for injury prevention through conditioning and strength training. In addition, John provides an array of services including injury and illness prevention and wellness, emergency care, examination and initial diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and facilitation of rehabilitation of injuries. The Dance Clinic offers students the opportunity to train (both indoors and outdoors) on the following equipment:

  • One Balanced Body Pilates reformer 
  • 2 Cadillac reformers 
  • Many different ellipticals 
  • Free weights & machine weights 
  • Foam rollers & TheraBand's 
  • Ice baths for legs & full-body 

Students can schedule appointments with John Siegel to: 

  • Learn how to use the Dance Clinic equipment 
  • Get Muscle release work 
  • Cupping  
  • Exercise & Nutrition Plans 
  • Get taping and/or wrapping done on injuries 
  • Getting extra help from the university (i.e. Health Services, CAPS, etc.)

The Dance Center Computer Lab provides high powered iMac computing and software for students to access for various coursework. On top of printing and archive services, the Computer Lab offers evening hours to allow for a safe and quite space for studying after classes end.

Resources include 15 27" iMacs, a Midi keyboard/Mic to work with Logic Pro for music making and sound design, the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Premiere, AfterEffects, Illustrator, Audition), Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Office, High Speed Internet, and much more. Lecturer workstation connected to two HD Video Monitors for classes.

The Costume Shop in the Dance Department is a professional workspace dedicated solely to the design and creation of dance costumes. This space is not shared with any other artistic department at CSULB. The shop also houses a beautiful Costume Stock of over twenty years of built dance costumes. The Costume Shop elevates the level of production here at CSULB. This shop not only serves to bring ideas to life on stage, but also as a laboratory for students to learn what it is like to work with a professional designer and costume shop.

Costume Shop Tour (Audio Description Version) 

Main space: 25’ X 50’, 1250 sq. ft., workshop for costume design, construction and maintenance with storage shelves, kitchenette, fitting room and dividable fitting space, separate office and laundry and dye room, including heating/ventilation, AC and windows. Two 5’ X 8’ cutting tables for cutting fabric. Thirteen dress forms of various sizes/styles. A variety of industrial and domestic sewing machines. A washing and drying machine, stovetop dye space, and industrial dye vat.

Storage space: 21’ X 75’, 1575 sq. ft., costume storage area with double rack system and 2 large, rolling ladders.

Costume Classes/Education

There are two classes you can take:

  1. Introduction to Dance Production: students will learn the backstage jobs that bring a production together including stage crew, lighting, sound and wardrobe.
  2. Costume Design for Dance: students learn the process of a costume designer.

  • We are committed to finding the best skin tone shade, with the performer's approval, for any costume that is attempting to be the color of your skin.
  • We are committed to labeling and categorizing the costume stock and materials in a way that is inclusive and denies stereotypes, racism, gender assumption, or culturally inappropriate terms.
  • We acknowledge that every person with a disability requires different accommodations. We are committed to adapting our costume space to any student that would like to work in the shop or is using the space for fittings or classes.
  • With every new dancer that is being fitted in the shop, we ask you fill out a “Costume Boundary” sheet to familiarize us with your preferred name, pronouns, and boundaries with clothing and hair.
  • We acknowledge that there are different products and increased time, and costs needed to achieve hairstyles for our Black students. The Shop Supervisor and Designer will collaborate in finding a style that works best with that dancer.
  • The Costume Supervisor will be attentive during fittings and dress rehearsals to recognize and point out to the Designer (Lighting or Costume) if a certain color choice is working against or not in favor with the color of the dancer’s skin.
