Summer Science Camp Gets Boost from Local Foundation
A massive thank you to Long Beach Community Foundation! CNSM's Young Scientists Camp (YSC) recently received a generous grant from the LBCF Community Impact fund to support the SEE US Succeed! portion of the camp.
Combining the forces of experienced teachers, future teachers, scientists and students, the SEE US Succeed! program is a two-week summer science camp that gives 1st-6th grade Long Beach Unified students experiencing housing insecurity a unique opportunity to learn about science through hands-on exploration, experiments and fun!
According to YSC program director and Science Education Professor Emerita Laura Henriques, "The kids get exposed to science in ways that they are traditionally not getting in school, and they get to spend time on a college campus in their own community. Who knows how many of these kids will become inspired and return to CSULB as a college student in the future as a result!"
It's not just about academic enrichment, though - campers are provided transportation, backpacks and school supplies, free lunch, and snacks. SEE US Succeed! campers also receive free vision screenings (including glasses if needed) through the program's partner, Vision to Learn.
"Tuition is a barrier for most of these families, but so is transportation. Being able to bring these youngsters to CSULB to experience a hands-on science enrichment program can be life changing," said Dr. Henriques.
Supporting Young Scientists Camp doesn't just mean supporting the campers though, it means supporting CSULB and CNSM, too!
"The camp also provides a mentored teaching opportunity for CSULB future teachers, thereby increasing the impact of the funding. I am so grateful to Long Beach Community Foundation's Community Impact program. This grant will provide academic enrichment for our campers, our CSULB students, and kids who would otherwise not be able to attend Young Scientists Camp."
