DrPH Program of Study

The post masters (MPH) Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree program is a 48 -semester units, two- calendar year (full time) or three years (part time) program that prepares graduates to be public health leaders, senior level administrators, applied researchers, policy makers and educators providing leadership to protect and improve the public’s health, at the community, state, national and global levels. The graduate will achieve this purpose by enrolling in one of the following three areas of specializations called areas of concentration: (1) Public Health informatics and Technology; (2) Global Health; and (3) Health Policy and Management.

The DrPH degree program is a state- supported program.  The program is designed for working professionals and includes both face-to-face and hybrid instructional modalities.

Course Description : Advanced Public Health Statistics

Catalog Description : Statistical methods for public health research and program evaluation based on study design. Includes data processing, multivariate statistical procedures, and survival analysis using statistical software. Course Title:  Ethics for Public Health Leaders 

Catalog Description Examines law, ethics, and human rights as determinates for the range of policy, practice, and research in public health. Analysis and description of the policy processes that stresses both ethical and political factors shaping the emergence of problems and policies. Catalog Description:  This course focuses on the social determinants of health, clinical prevention, population and global health.  Emphasis is placed on epidemiology, public health, health promotion, evidence based recommendations, environmental and occupational health, infectious diseases, emergency and disaster preparedness, cultural diversity, and social justice.  (Letter grade only A-F)

Course Title: Program Development to Implementation of Health Promotion

Catalog Description:   Development of tailored, theory- and evidence-based health promotion intervention in the area of concentration, including a implementation plan. Evaluation of health promotion intervention targeting the various levels of the ecological model (individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, policy and systems levels) for effectiveness and cultural values. Course Title: Advanced Environmental Health & Social Justice

Catalog Description: This course is designed to provide Doctor of Public Health students with a broad overview of the effects of both harmful and salutogenic environmental factors on human health, and to foster the development of the technical, organizational, and communication skills necessary to effectively engage communities, develop intersectoral partnerships, and lead interdisciplinary teams in assessing and controlling environmental health risks. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to apply an “equity lens” to understanding and addressing the distribution of environmental health risks affecting health disparities, environmental justice, and impacts on vulnerable and marginalized populations. The course will consist of a series of lectures and applied problem-solving, drawing on concepts and strategies derived from ecology, epidemiology, toxicology, and environmental management and sociology. Catalog Description:  This course provides an in-depth exploration of strategic planning within the global health context, emphasizing the development, implementation, and evaluation of global health initiatives. Key topics include health systems strengthening, resource allocation, program sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and policy development. Course Title: Health Policy Analysis Methods

Catalog Description: Advanced skill development in researchable policy questions using data analysis to predict possible outcomes of health policy and frame decision making. Topics include: Advocacy, relationship between health services research, health policy research, health policy analysis, and health program management; research design selection and execution; ethical dilemmas in conflicting roles; and presentation of analysis and recommendations to successfully influence decisions. Synthesis of the skills and knowledge gained throughout the degree program. Faculty advisor will help the student to determine the best practicum based on experience and career goals. Student submits proposal for plan of work that is approved by the Faculty advisor and the site Supervisor, demonstrating that the practicum includes substantive advanced public health practice. The site supervisor will submit evaluation of the student’s mastery of selected public health competencies. Students complete a report on the work completed that includes a reflective essay on their personal and professional reactions to the applied practice experience. Forty hours per unit credit Credit/No Credit grading only. Catalog  Description:The focus of this course is to provide best practices in teaching diverse students enrolled in Public Health and /or Health Science majors or related discipline under the supervision of an expert preceptor.   The topics covered in this course are the application of principles of learning, instruction, curriculum development, specific microteaching strategies to actual teaching of college students, or at the global level for larger communities. 90 clock teaching practicum = 3 units(Letter grade only (A-F)

Course Title: Advanced Public Health Informatics and Technology

Catalog Description: In this course students will acquire geospatial skills, applied to health disparities/racial justice. The primary goal of this course is gaining skills to approach public health problems from an equity perspective.  As the healthcare ecosystem evolves with massively expanding volumes of data, provider organizations are facing new challenges on how to make sense of the data available. The key course learning objective is understanding place in display and analysis of health data at local/national/global scales.

Course Title: Public Health Research and Evaluation 

Catalog Description:  Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods for evaluating public health research, interventions and services. Topics include research design, advanced sampling techniques and evaluation methods relevant to public health programming and evaluation.
