Vision and Mission Statement

The mission of the CSULB Health Science DrPH Program is to provide the best graduate education and training in a multiethnic and urban environment to develop highly competent professionals and leaders in community health education and public health. The program strives to afford excellence in teaching, conduct research and provide service to local, regional, national, and international populations living within the surrounding communities, while making a significant contribution towards increasing health equity for underserved populations.

To be the premier Doctor of Public Health Degree Program in California that produces outstanding public health professionals to meet the needs of underserved societies locally and globally.

The purpose of the Doctor of Public Health program is to prepare advance practice public health professionals in the following three areas of specializations:

(1) Public Health Informatics and Technology--to strengthen the U.S. public health information technology efforts, improve COVID-19 data collection and increase representation of underrepresented communities within the public health IT workforce.

(2) Global Health -- to meet the health promotion and disease prevention aspect of public health at all levels of humanity -- local, national and international levels. True public health efforts must address global health needs. Attending to international health issues not only expands the wellbeing of our world, but strengthens national security by ensuring our ability to prevent, detect and respond to global disease. The Global Health Concentration will engage students in developing deep understanding of common as well as unique issues that impact health and health care around the world. Students will advance their leadership skills to effectively integrate political and economic factors in work to enhance health for populations across the globe.

(3) Health Policy and Management--Although not as novel as the other concentrations it serves a community need for leadership skills in health policy and management. California is home to many health care agencies and has diverse leadership needs in both the public and private sector. The purpose of this specialization is to enable the graduate to serve the leadership needs of the community in health policy and management. The Health Science Department is currently seeking approval from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) by submitting a "Substantive Change Form" to include the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in our accredited degree programs. Our current accreditation is valid for seven years, until July 1, 2030.
