Giulia Togato

I received my Ph.D. in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience from the University of Granada (Spain). I have been actively working as a translator and consecutive interpreter from a young age, using Italian, Spanish, and English as my main languages. My expertise lies in editorial translation, specialized translation, and consecutive interpreting.

​I have worked as a researcher at the University of Granada, and as a professor and researcher at Pennsylvania State University (USA) and California State University Long Beach (USA).

My research focuses on profiling untrained versus trained bilinguals (i.e., translators and interpreters) through the perspective of cognitive psychology. I am the founder and PI of the CoHaBiT PsyLing Lab (PsychoLinguistic Lab in COgnition, BeHAvior, Bilingualism, Translation), housed within the RGRLL Department at California State University Long Beach. I actively engage in international research collaborations to advance understanding in my field of expertise.

So far, I have designed 20 new courses and taught 65 sections in 3 languages, covering courses such as psycholinguistics (for psychologists and linguists), psycholinguistics for T&I, research methods in T&I, consecutive interpreting, quantitative research in T&I, Spanish linguistics, translation theory, written and sight translation, and Italian and Spanish language instruction, to name a few. My teaching spans both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently, at CSULB, I teach 4 courses per semester on a rotational basis, amongst the ones listed below.

I serve as a peer reviewer for journals and publishing houses, helping to advance research in translation and psycholinguistics. I also serve service language providers as an external psycholinguist consultant. Currently, I’m an active member of the innovation council at GLOBO Language Solutions, where we brainstorm about the best strategies to integrate cognitive research and AI into remote and in-person language services.

I am deeply passionate about my work. My applied experience in translation and interpreting, coupled with my research in the social sciences, allows me to approach complex linguistic phenomena through the lens of the scientific method. This helps me not only gather, assess, and interpret data in a scientific way but also turn it into practical insights that can benefit our society.

I deeply believe that interdisciplinarity and cross-sector collaborations are key to infusing new knowledge into improving societal welfare.

Throughout the years, I have become an expert at adapting to new challenges and improvising creative solutions while simultaneously troubleshooting several other problems.
