Understanding driving forces for dissipative, i.e., out of equilibrium, assembly of nanoparticles from colloidal solution at liquid-solid interfaces provides the ability to design external cues for reconfigurable optical response. Vibrational spectroscopy alongside ab initio simulations 'visualize' chemical reactions in plasmonic nanogaps in order to understand physical and chemical cues governing reactions. I will present results showing these systems can be used as sensors where analyte interactions with plasmonic nanogap chemistry allow for detection at picomolar concentrations in complex media. Antibiotic susceptibility tests for medical diagnostic applications and detection of electronic waste in tap water and wastewater are platform technologies achieved.
