Career Profiles: English
The study of English involves comprehensive training in reading, writing, and reasoning. One can focus on an emphasis in creative writing, English education, literature and rhetoric composition or choose a special emphasis. A mastery of language, appealing to both logic and emotion, prepares students to convince varied audiences, in presenting ideas and themselves. English continues to offer a traditional liberal education, preparing a well-rounded person who can deal with people and problems in all walks of life. An excellent pre-professional major, developing skills in analysis and expression sought by law schools, government agencies and large corporations, English provides a strong foundation for professional writers (both creative and technical) as well. Most entry-level jobs require a bachelor's degree, but work experience and evidence of talent are increasingly desirable, if not absolutely necessary.
