SACNAS Is a Great First Conference, Say BUILD Trainees

The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Conference was held last month in Long Beach and many BUILD Scholars were in attendance. Initial trainee feedback was that going to SACNAS first was great preparation to ease them into the large professional conference experience. Of the two major conferences CSULB BUILD program trainees are required to choose from to attend, SACNAS has a stronger cultural component. However, the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) offers a better selection of professional workshops at the conference. Both offer a great experience for trainees. We are in the process of interviewing CSULB BUILD attendees, so keep an eye out for a more detailed story in next month’s newsletter.
 

New Internship Resource Binder Available in the BUILD Center

Our current VISTA volunteer, Kimberly Torres, has compiled an Internship Resource Binder that not only provides information on internships available and suitable for BUILD trainees, but also includes commentary from our trainees who have participated in those internships this past summer. Please let your trainees know about this available resource that can assist them in identifying a potential off-campus training experience for next summer.

 

Reminder: Applications for BUILD Research Stimulation Grants Are Due this Month

Applications for the three BUILD Research Stimulation Grants – one for collaborative research, one for research project development and one for mid-size equipment – are due Nov. 14, 2016 by 5 pm PT. Applications are available on the BUILD website. To learn more about these grants, and download the applications, visit the announcement page.

 

Multicultural Workshops this Month

BUILD Research Mentors are required to attend at least one multicultural workshop to be eligible to get new BUILD trainees in their research program in 2017. If you haven’t attended one yet, here are the dates for two scheduled this month.
  • Empowering Underrepresented Students in a Diverse Classroom. You have two times from which to choose: Friday, Nov. 4, 1 to 3pm, or Tuesday, Nov. 8, 10am to noon.

Instrumentation and Methodology Workshops this Month

Want to improve your skills with ActiGraph accelerometry or ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy? Two workshops are scheduled this month!

  • Actigraphy: Nov. 4 from 1:30-3:30pm, SSPA-006.
    Guest Speaker: Melissa Mohr-Loeks, Philips Respironics
    ActiGraph accelerometry monitors are among the most widely used and extensively validated devices of their kind. Its flexible and innovative software platform combines powerful data analytics with comprehensive study management. Workshop participants will learn how to use the devices and software platform.

  • Principles of Ultrafast Time-Resolved Spectroscopy: University of California, Irvine (UCI), Nov. 18 from 2-4pm or December 2 from 2-4pm, UCI LAB 307
    This 2-hour workshop will go over: the history of spectroscopy, pump probe spectroscopy, white light generation theory, explanation and interpretation of fluorescence data, and more. It will also provide demonstrations of the instruments. This workshop will also be available on December 2. 10 spots are available on each day.
 
 

Resource for Non-NIH Postdoctoral Funding

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) website has a page with links to a variety of non-NIH postdoctoral funding sources. These resources are available to researchers between completion of a doctoral degree and acceptance of a faculty position. Please pass this information along to your current and former trainees that might be a good fit for these opportunities. Save the Date: BUILD Spring Research Symposium

The next Annual BUILD Symposium will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, 2016. Please mark your calendars. It is possible one or more of your BUILD student trainees will need your assistance preparing for their poster presentation.
