BUILD Associates PREP: July 18 to 29
The new BUILD Associates will be participating in a two-week Preparing for Research Excellence Program (PREP). They will gain professional skills and training to prepare them to be active participants in your research group placement starting in the fall semester.
If you have an Associate joining you this fall, you should have received an email requesting information about special trainings your student might need and a research topic for your student to look up during their literature search activity. If you are available, we would also like for your Associate mentee to meet with you or a representative from your lab during the PREP period. Please contact Dr. Jesse Dillon (jesse.dillon@csulb.edu) with this information or with any questions or concerns you might have.
Remind Your Scholars: Forthcoming Deadlines for Your Mentees
Also, your mentees have projects due for the Symposium. Please help them meet their deadlines.
- Wednesday, July 13: The draft of their poster is due. Your Scholars will receive feedback from the Graduate Assistants and BUILD training faculty. We hope you can provide guidance on your Scholars’ poster.
- Wednesday, July 20: Students must submit their poster title to their GA’s
- Monday, July 25: The final version of the poster is due for printing.
Improve Your Skills: Upcoming Workshops
CSULB BUILD provides a variety of workshops on research techniques that you can attend at no cost. These are excellent opportunities to refresh skills you already have or gain a new skill. Register now for any and all that interest you:
• RNA Sequencing Data Analysis: 3-day workshop, August 1, 3 and 5 from 10am to noon in HSCI 07.
• Immunoassay Workshop: Monday, August 8, from 10am to 2:30pm in Micro 008A.
You will find Applications for these workshops on the Instrumentation & Methodology Workshops page.
Schedule Your Headshot
Please check your calendar and schedule a time to come by the BUILD offices (PH1-123) sometime between now and mid-August to have your profile picture taken. This should take no more than 5 to 10 minutes of your time.
Currently, open slots to schedule your photo are:
• Tuesdays and Thursday: 10am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm
• Fridays: 10am to 1pm
Please email Alex Garbanati at alex.garbanati@csulb.edu to schedule your time slot. If these times are not available for you, contact Alex to make other arrangements.
We Need Your Input: Post SURGE Feedback
The BUILD Summer Undergraduate Research Gateway to Excellence (SURGE) program is half over and we hope your new and continuing Scholars have been enjoying a productive summer in your lab/project.
Please let us know if you have had any difficulties with the transition. Many of you also know that all BUILD trainees submit a weekly activity log. We may be contacting some of you for spot checking the records for accuracy. In addition, we’ll be seeking your help in evaluating SURGE participants.
Scholars participating in the SURGE 1 program are new to BUILD and their performance in the SURGE Learning Community sessions and research lab/project will be evaluated in August to determine whether they continue for the rest of the year. We will be seeking your input on their performance in your lab/project at the end of July via an online survey.
Continuing Scholars participated in the SURGE 2 program. We will seek your input on the performance of your continuing Scholar mentees this summer so that we can determine the best way to support their Year 2 activities, especially for research and graduate school application.

Please remember that the National Institutes of Health require that you acknowledge the support you received through BUILD. For details on how to do that, read “Acknowledging BUILD in Your Publications.”
Also, please let us know about your publication so we can feature you and your trainees in a future issue of the BUILD Research Mentors News. Send your publication information, along with your trainee names to carma.spence@csulb.edu.
