Post Retirement Employment
Post retirement employment allows retired employees, with approval, to work at the University for a limited amount of hours per fiscal year. The 180-day waiting period starts from the date of retirement. The exception to this rule is:
- Employees who participate in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) with the California State University (CSU). The participation must be pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement with the CSU that existed prior to January 1, 2013 or has been included in subsequent agreements.
You cannot be employed by a CalPERS employer for a period of 180 days after your retirement date without reinstating from retirement.
Be sure to review the Employment After Retirement publication for specific guidelines and restrictions.
Academic Positions
Academic positions are restricted to working 960 hours in a fiscal year or 50% of the hours the employee was employed during the last fiscal year prior to retirement, whichever is less, for all CalPERS covered employers. Exceptions to the 180-day wait period are participants in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) who must be pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement with the CSU prior to January 1, 2013 or has been included in subsequent agreements.
Please contact Faculty Affairs at (562) 985-8114 for more information with FERP (Faculty Early Retirement Program).

Staff and management positions are restricted to working 960 hours for all CalPERS covered employers in a fiscal year.
