LUKE Pay-By-Space Machines
LUKE is the term for the campus' newly installed multi-space parking meters. Coined after their cameo in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman, these high-tech machines are making the campus a bit more user-friendly.
LUKEs are replacing the majority of single-space parking meters on campus. They are located in the following areas:
- Lot 1
- Lot 8A
- Lot 15
- Lot 17
- South Campus Drive
- South Campus Turnaround
- East State University Drive
They are easy to use, simply:
- Enter the parking space number of the space in which you are parked.
- Enter the amount of time you would like to purchase, rates are as follows:
- 1 Hour - $2.00
- 2 Hours - $5.00
- 3 Hours - $10.00
- 4 Hours - $15.00
- Insert your cash or credit, debit or Beach Club card for payment. Unlike the single space meters, the LUKE machines will accept credit or debit cards for transactions. LUKE will only accept $1 and $5 bills and does not give any change. While the LUKE machines will accept cash this spring, it is possible that only credit, debit, or Beach Club cards will be accepted in the future. If this change is made, notice will be provided.
You are done. No permit needs to be displayed in your vehicle, although you have the ability to print a receipt that displays the space number and time your use expires.
If you have any questions, please contact the Parking and Transportation Services Office at (562) 985-4146.
January Paycheck Reminder
On December 23, 2011, Congress passed the Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011 which expires February 29, 2012. This legislation continues the employee Social Security contribution at a 4.2% rate for wages paid through February 29 of this year. Since the December 2011 payroll was processed by the State Controller's Office (SCO) prior to Congress taking action, most State employees had their pay calculated using the higher Social Security rate of 6.2%. It is anticipated that the SCO will issue employee adjustments with the January 2012 payroll (issue date January 31, 2012).
Although this temporary payroll tax cut is currently scheduled to expire February 29, 2012, a House-Senate Conference committee is scheduled to convene soon to consider extending the payroll tax cut for the remainder of 2012. If the legislation is not passed, all checks and direct deposits dated March 1 or later will revert back to the 6.2% rate.
Rain Delay – Parking Lot 18
Unfortunately, due to anticipated rain this Friday January 20 through Sunday, January 22, the opening of Parking Lot 18 may be delayed until Thursday, January 26, 2012. Please note that this opening date assumes no rain on Monday, January 23.
All other parking lots and roadways will remain open. Landscaping and other components of Lot 18 will be postponed to allow the parking lot to open as quickly as possible. Landscaping will be installed at a time and in a manner that accommodates use of the parking lot by students, faculty, and staff.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and we apologize for the inconvenience this situation may cause.

Because You Asked …
The first floor of Brotman Hall is now carpeted for your safety. The waxed floor created a hazard; in fact, several people tripped and fell in the area. It's much safer now and you can walk with confidence!
Campus Green
"Green Buildings" are sustainable facilities that maximize operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. Green buildings are more energy and water efficient, have good indoor air quality, and use less raw materials and resources in their operations.
The Student Recreation and Wellness Center recently received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building certification, at the GOLD level, and is the first building on campus to achieve such a rating. The Horn Center is undergoing a pilot project certification under the LEED for Existing Building program, and the new Hall of Science was designed and built using the LEED guidelines and will soon undergo the certification process.
