Spear Phishing Training Now Available in Skillsoft via SSO
An increasing number of our campus email users are succumbing to phishing attempts. According to a recent study by the SANS Institute, 95% of all attacks on organization networks are the result of phishing. A sophisticated type of phishing called spear phishing targets a specific individual, organization or business to steal confidential information or even install malware on a targeted user’s computer. To protect yourself and the University from becoming compromised by such scams you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of CSU’s five-minute online Spear Phishing training. It is voluntary training added to your Skillsoft training profile in the View My Plan section. Skillsoft training is accessible through the Single Sign-On application.
As a quick reminder, the following recommendations can minimize your chances of falling victim to a phishing email scam:
- Remember that CSULB and other legitimate businesses would not ask you to send confidential information via email.
- Be cautious of phishing attempts, even from @csulb.edu email addresses.
- Configure your inbox to filter out spam and phishing by marking them as junk each time you receive them.
- Be cautious of unsolicited email with links to external webpages, and treat email attachments with extra caution.
- Ensure your personally-owned computers have antivirus software installed that is regularly updated.
If you notice a suspicious email or want a second opinion on the legitimacy of an email, please forward the email immediately to alert@csulb.edu. The Division of Information Technology will take appropriate action and respond if necessary. For more information on phishing and to see examples, visit our Phishing 101 Knowledge Base page.
