GWAR & GPE FAQs
GWAR Placement Exam (GPE):
- Yes.
- Do I still need to take it?
- No.
- Will this exam take place?
No. In accordance with updated CSU policy, the GWAR Placement Exam (GPE) will no longer be administered."
- Will I get a refund?
- Students who have registered for the May 2025 GPE will receive a refund of the $25 fee based on the payment method used to register for the GPE (e.g., credit cards or e-check).
- I have not received my score. When will I receive it?
You will receive your score in four to six weeks following the test date. A specific scoring range will not be required to enroll in a Writing Intensive course.
- I paid for my exam and the score is no longer needed for placement. Can I receive a refund?
- No. We are unable to retroactively refund fees for services provided under the prior requirements.
- My GPE score was below 11. Do I need to take any GWAR course(s) before enrolling in a Writing Intensive to fulfill the GWAR?
No. Starting Summer 2025, students are no longer required to complete the GWAR Portfolio courses or ENGL 301A
- Since the score is no longer needed for placement, can I receive a refund for the GPE?
- No. We are unable to retroactively refund fees for services provided under the prior requirements
GWAR Portfolio Courses:
- Yes. The units and grades you earned will count toward the 120-unit graduation requirement.
- Should I remain in the course? Does this apply to my graduation requirements?
- Yes. You should continue with that course to earn a grade and course credit. Your units and grade will apply to your graduation requirements.
- Should I still submit my portfolio?
- Yes. Consult your instructor regarding the specific instructions for your course.
- If I do not need this course for my graduation requirements, will I be dropped from this course and refunded?
- No. If you choose not to complete the course, you are responsible for dropping it by the appropriate deadline. Standard withdrawal policies will apply.
- If I do not drop my Spring 2025 GWAR portfolio course, can I take the course for CR/NC?
- No, the deadline for CR/NC has passed.
- Do I need to stay enrolled in this course?
- You do not need to complete the course to meet the GWAR. If you are taking the portfolio course for some other reason, consult with your primary academic advisor.
Enrollment in Writing Intensive Courses:
- What determines my placement into a Writing Intensive Course if there is no longer the GPE?
You can register directly into a Writing Intensive course as long as you have completed any required prerequisites (excluding the GPE and Portfolio courses, which are no longer required). If you have questions about which WI to take or how to enroll, please consult your primary academic advisor.
- I need to take a WI course to meet the GWAR, but the catalog and/or my Academic Requirements Report says that I need a GPE score or portfolio course as a pre-requisite. What are my next steps?
You may register directly for a WI course. The GPE and portfolio course are no longer prerequisites.
- I have difficulty registering for my WI course because it still says my portfolio course requirement is not met. What are my next steps?
- This prerequisite should have been removed. Please try registering again. If the issue persists, contact your primary academic advisor for assistance.
