The Teacher Librarian Services Credential Program is offered in a 100% online format.
The program prepares fully qualified teacher-librarian professionals, with a strong emphasis on addressing the information, educational technology, and reading needs of diverse populations. It offers a Teacher Librarian Services Credential and a Special Class Authorization in Information and Digital Literacies.
The state-accredited program is based on the principles and philosophy of the American Association of School Librarians, emphasizing the information professional roles of teaching for learning, building the learning environment, and empowering learning through leadership.
The program is strongly committed to the principles of equal opportunity for diverse populations. Assignments, readings, and course objectives emphasize the importance of multicultural / multilingual programs and materials. Course delivery is provided in synchronous and asynchronous formats online.
Candidates must apply by the published deadline, be admitted, and matriculate into the university in order to be eligible to complete the Teacher Librarian Services Credential. Admissions decisions are made at the program level by the faulty. Please see the Application Process website for deadlines and requirements.
Understand, research, articulate, and model the overall role of librarians in diverse learning communities. Students will be able to meet standards in the following areas of library services:
- Apply knowledge of multicultural, ethical and legal issues pertaining to using ICT with the global community.
- Synthesize leadership principles within the practice of information and educational technology.
- Apply instructional design principles to locate, evaluate and develop educational materials.
- Integrate theoretical perspectives to review, interpret, and apply research in learning technology.
- Demonstrate effective written, electronic, and oral communications that reflect critical thinking and information literacy.
- Design, develop, implement, and assess learning experiences.
- Promote reading for learning, personal growth and enjoyment.
- Organize collections according to standard library cataloging and classification principles.
Program Options
Students can earn this stand-alone advanced credential, which supplements a California initial teaching credential.

Students can also pursue a MS in Educational Technology and Media Leadership, which subsumes the credential work.
The Teacher Librarian Services credential program also fulfills the Special Class Authorization for Teacher Librarians, which is met by successfully taking the course ETEC 523.
