Dr. Alaine Ocampo

What fears or anxieties did you have about going to college?

As part of the CSULB faculty, I am proud to be part of an educational team that embraces the motto of “NO BARRIERS”. I was honored to be selected as a mentor to first-generation college students because I would be able to represent a philosophy born from one of the most diverse campuses in the CSU system. Understanding the complexity of the intersection of diversity and identity, I am passionate about supporting first-generation college students to thrive in their academic journey as freshman (and beyond ) while here at CSULB. As a mentor, I look forward to reaping the intrinsic reward of being part of something bigger than an educational system to others--- as I was able to beat the odds myself with the help of mentors through my academic career. A combination of finanical struggle and imposter syndrome permeated my state-of-mind. I was fortunate to meet a classmate going through similar challenges during my first year and eventually a professor who believed in me. I was encouraged by this professor/mentor to apply to graduate school and eventually pursue a Doctorate. The picture attached is one of me sitting with my Mentor from CSULB (Dr. Carolyn Conway Madding). She was there when I received my Ph.D. in Education from Chapman University.

Having worked in various settings while in high school and during college, my positions in a clothing store and as a bank teller have laid the foundation for dealing with difficult personalities. Handling confrontation and learning that "how" you say something is more important than "what" you actually say are soft skills that aren't explicity taught in school.
