GenExcel
GenExcel is a mentoring program for first-generation first-time/first-year students at California State University, Long Beach. The program is designed to assist this student population’s transition by creating a network of support. GenExcel enhances the student experience by connecting new first-gen students with both a peer mentor and a faculty mentor. Mentors are invested in their mentee's success and are ready to listen, inspire, help navigate challenges, and provide opportunities. GenExcel's core purpose is the cultivation of meaningful relationships between mentors, mentees, and the University community with the goal of supporting first-gen student success, increasing retention, and creating future leaders.
How Are Mentees and Mentors Matched?
First-gen students are matched with a peer mentor based on common interests and background, as well as academic and professional aspirations. To get started, students are invited to register and complete an online survey to paint a holistic picture of their interests and experiences.
What Are Some Examples of Mentee and Mentor Discussions?
- How do I balance the demands of school responsibilities, family responsibilities, and a social life?
- What are some steps I can take to set myself up for academic, social, and career success?
- What are the best ways to make connections with peers, instructors, and professional contacts?
Who Can Participate?
All incoming CSULB first-generation* first-time/first-year students can sign up to be a mentee. Participants in the program may eventually be able to serve as a peer mentor.
*GenExcel's definition of a first-generation college student is a student whose parent(s) / legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor's degree.
