Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum of California State University, Long Beach is a community of people who examine, critique, and create contemporary art and culture. It was expanded by 4,000 square feet from 2020–2022 and transformed into a more inclusive arts complex. The renovation doubled its exhibition space, deepened accessibility capacities, and broadened community impact. Striking metal panels with triangular points add aesthetic interest to the façade. A more visible diamond-shaped glass vestibule welcomes visitors into the building from a beautified Patron’s Plaza.

Highlights of the community-centric, 11,000-square-foot museum include accessible collection storage space, galleries with moveable walls, a state-of-the-art education center, climate-controlled facilities, and outdoor gardens with seating areas suitable for public events. Importantly, multi-use interior spaces offer collection research opportunities for students, faculty, scholars, and community members through our online reservation system. New solar panels, energy-efficient fixtures, sustainable building materials, and water-friendly landscaping utilizing native plants earned the Museum a LEED Gold certification in 2023.

Designed by campus architect Edward Killingsworth’s office and constructed in 1987, the 50,000-square-foot building served as the University’s former North Library. While not a mid-century building, its overall massing is complimentary to the Killingsworth-planned campus.

The building’s most recent role as a student services center, named after campus president Steve Horn, has provided students a consolidated hub for academic counseling, learning assistance, and the largest computer lab on campus.
