Ionic and Geometric Tuning of Magnetism: Paths to Next-Generation Hardware
Dr. Julius de Rojas, Oklahoma State University
September 30, 2024
11:00am in HSCI-102
In this talk, I will overview the challenges facing conventional computing structures and how emerging spintronic approaches such as magneto-ionics and magnonics provide a potential path forward. I will then present our work on magneto-ionics in transition metal oxides and nitrides, an emerging subfield of spintronics in which material
properties can be tuned by moving ions into and out of magnetic material under low-power. I will highlight novel functionalities in oxygen-based and nitrogen-based systems and discuss potential applications in next-generation computing paradigms such as neuromorphic computing. I will then overview our recent work on the magnetization dynamics of artificial spin ice arrays and their potential applications in magnonics, where spin-waves are used to transport and process data. I will then conclude with our investigation into "pseudo-3D" tri-layer artificial spin ice structures and demonstrate bespoke magnetization states and resonance spectra, a potentially programmable degree of freedom for magnonic and microwave devices.
About the Colloquium
The Colloquium is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in physics and what physicists do after they graduate. Hosted by the Physics and Astronomy Department at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in physics. All students are encouraged to attend for a well-rounded experience and training in physics.
