Upholding Civil Dialogue
Dear Beach Community:
Recently, members of Turning Point USA attempted to disrupt a meeting attended by members of the Black Student Union, Students for Quality Education, and La F.U.E.R.Z.A.
Our university police responded to reports of this disruption and found that the Turning Point USA organizers were in violation of our campus's "Time, Place, and Manner" policy that promotes opportunities for free expression while ensuring that operations related to our educational mission can best be fulfilled. Turning Point USA organizers were ordered to disperse. No member of the CSULB Black Student Union, Students for Quality Education, or La F.U.E.R.Z.A. was detained or asked to disperse.
There also have been comments on social media posts related to this incident that many in our community have found objectionable and even threatening. These posts are under review by law enforcement to identify any appropriate follow-up.
Free speech is a core belief and commitment at The Beach. Yet this recent incident highlights the need for us to find constructive ways to dialogue and support civil discourse. This is central to our democracy and to our role as an institution of higher education.
