License Plate Recognition and Virtual Permitting

License Plate Recognition (LPR) and Virtual Permitting

CSULB is now utilizing  License Plate Recognition (LPR) and virtual permitting. As a result, customers will experience a variety of new benefits, including:

  • Virtual permitting – no physical permits to store or display
  • Increased convenience – no more moving permits from vehicle to vehicle, the system can hold multiple license plates per permit
  • Increased sustainability – no more ink, paper, plastic, postage or envelopes used for producing permits. Also, there will be reduced waste and litter in all campus lots
  • Ability to pay remotely – for Short-Term parking customers there will be no more running to the meter or waiting in lines at a pay station as the option will soon be available to pay remotely via the Parkmobile app (available during Phase II)

Parking and Transportation Services is upgrading the current parking pay stations and related parking technology. This new technology includes a License Plate Recognition (LPR) feature and a Parkmobile app that will allow CSULB to move to a paperless parking system and provide a number of other convenient services to the campus community. LPR uses information currently provided when obtaining a parking permit and that information is referenced only against a campus database used to verify appropriate permitting on campus. The enforcement rules will not change because of this new technology, including the process to appeal a citation.

Please explore the LPR FAQ webpage for answers to specific LPR questions. We look forward to continuing to improve your parking experience on campus. For any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly at parkinggeneral@csulb.edu.
