Minors

We offer two undergraduate minors: a TESOL minor, and a Linguistics minor.

What is it?

The Linguistics minor consists of LING/ANTH 170 (Introduction to Linguistics), plus four other linguistics courses. One linguistics course  from another department may be counted, with advisor permission. See the Catalog for more details.

Who can do this minor?

The minor in Linguistics is popular with students majoring in fields such as English, foreign languages, Anthropology, and Speech-Language Pathology. The minor is not open to students majoring in Linguistics or ASLD.

How can I add this minor?

Please contact the undergraduate advisor, Dr. Michael Ahland (Michael.Ahland@csulb.edu).

Would you like to teach English abroad? Would you like to explore TESOL as a career? Are you interested in later pursuing an M.A. in TESOL? If any of these apply to you, you may want to consider a minor in TESOL.

What is it?

The TESOL minor consists of 5 courses (15 units). You will learn about language structure, second language acquisition, and language pedagogy. Please see the Catalog for current requirements.

Who can do this minor?

The minor is open to students who are not majoring in Linguistics. (The university does not allow students to major and minor in the same subject.) ASLD majors can declare the TESOL minor.

What can I do with this minor?

The minor will help you obtain and succeed at jobs teaching English abroad, in countries such as Japan, China, and South Korea. If you are thinking of later earning a Graduate Certificate in TESOL, or an M.A. in TESOL, the minor will cover some of the prerequisite coursework. The minor is not a credential for teaching English in public schools. Please see the TESOL career page for more details.
