Los Angeles Studies Certificate

 

(This new state-supported certificate was approved by the CSULB Academic Senate on November 6, 2024, and approved by the President on December 2, 2024.)

 

The University Honors Program offers acertificate inLos Angeles Studies tohonors students who wish to complete their honors andgeneral education requirements through a focused interdisciplinary study of our local area that also develops an ethics of care. The certificate includes an exploration of cultural products and performances in the greater Los Angeles region (UHP 101), issues of sustainability and technology related to our resources, biodiversity, climate and public health (UHP 201), interdisciplinary topics, problems, or issues with a view towards integration of the areas of study involved inlower-division courses (UHP 300), identification and critical analysis of current problems in selected areas (UHP 490), governing structures, demographics, and policies through service-learning (UHP 301), and urban history and theory from the 18th century to the present (UHP 401). The certificate is open to Honors Students from any major who apply, meet the 3.5 GPA requirement, and are accepted into the honors program as incoming new 1st year or transfer students as well as current students.

Required Courses:

Lower Division (Choose ONE of the following):

  • UHP 101: Art, Community, Place: The LA Interchange
    • 3 units, Prereq/Coreq: One GE Foundation Course.
  • UHP 201: Sustainability and Technology in Los Angeles
    • 3 units, Prereq/Coreq: One GE Foundation Course.

Upper Division (Choose ONE of the following):

  • UHP 300: Junior Colloquium- Honors
    • 3 units
  • UHP 490: Selected Topics- Honors
    • 3 units

Take ALL of the following:

  • UHP 301: Politics and Policy in Los Angeles
    • 3 units, Prereq: GE Foundation and upper-division status.
  • UHP 401: The History of Los Angeles: Invention of a City
    • 3 units, Prereq: GE Foundation and upper-division status.
  • UHP 496A (1 unit): Research Participation- Honors I
  • UHP 496B (2 units): Research Participation- Honors II
    • Prereq: UHP 496A or consent of program director and supervising faculty.
  • UHP 498 (3 units): Senior Thesis/Project
