French & Spanish Language Placement Exam
Welcome to the RGRLL Department's Language Proficiency Testing page! Here, students can prepare to assess their skills in French or Spanish to ensure they are placed in the most suitable language course. We utilize the ACTFL Proficiency Test, administered through Language Testing International. This web-based test is adaptive and can take up to 60 minutes to finish. Upon completion, you will receive an email with your score.
To begin your assessment, please follow the link provided in the sidebar to access the LTI site. This process is designed to help you maximize your learning experience and achieve your language goals.

Instructions for the Placement Test for French or Spanish
- Go to Language Testing International
- Click on the French or Spanish:
- Click on “Choose Test” for “Programs with ACTFL requirements:
- Enter “California State University, Long Beach RGRLL” and click on “Continue”:
- Read the Instructions and Click on “Continue”:
- Click on “Select Test” and then on “Continue”:
- Select the right time zone (PST) for your RPT (Reading Proficiency Test) and LPT
(Listening Proficiency Test): - Click on next and follow instructions to create an account. Upon creating your account,
you will then pay for $15 for your test and receive an email with information for completing
your test. - Upon completion, you will receive an email with your score.
Upon completion, you will receive an email with your score, which corresponds to the following levels:
- Novice Mid = 1st semester (French: 100A or 101A; Spanish: 100)
- Novice High = 2nd semester (French: 100B or 101B; Spanish: 101B)
- Intermediate Low = 3rd semester (French: 201A; Spanish: 200 or 201A)
- Intermediate Mid = 4th semester (French: 201B; Spanish: 200 or 201B)
