Philosophy
In learning about foundational texts of world literature, I hope students will be excited and inspired by the imaginative productions from around the world. By exploring works over time and across genres, for example, Shakespeare to Steven Colbert in the Comic Spirit course, diverse writers such as Haruki Murakami and Salman Rushdie in World Literature courses, the varieties of postmodernisms in Art and Literature or Greek to Irish theater in theater classes, I hope students will be able to see the continuity of the human artistic enterprise. Since cinema captures the mythology (and tensions) of modern existence so well, I incorporate it whenever possible. By this interdisciplinary and context based approach, students will be able to not only enjoy some of the most brilliant works of all times, but be able to see the relevance of these to their world.
