I have had a long and rewarding relationship with California State University Long Beach. I was trained in Illinois and hired by California to teach for five years. To renew my credentials, I took audio visual and California history classes at Cal State Long Beach. This gave me a renewed general secondary credential, a new elementary credential, and a new administrative credential in California. After five years of teaching, my wife and I decided to start a family and I went to the Cal State Long Beach Placement office to look for a job. They offered me a job and I worked there for three years and then in the CSU system for two years and four months. I was then hired back at Long Beach in 1971 and worked there until 1990. During this time, I was the director of the building program and was called the Associate Vice President for Physical Planning and Development. I was then hired in the system office to head the then 23 campuses and served that role for 10 years before I retired. During my time at Long Beach, I had a hand in the pyramid, the Japanese Garden, the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, and many other buildings. I was even awarded the Alum of the Year in 1987, the President's Outstanding Service Award in 2001, and the Hall of Fame Award in 2006. My wife and I even planted palm trees around the pyramid to replace the original trees. I have a CSULB California license plate and I am proud to have had such a long and rewarding relationship with the university.
