On March 23, more than 300 women in engineering and male allies took over the University Student Union for the 4th Annual BEACH Women in Engineering Conference.

Themed, “Get on the Inside Track,” the conference had 80 speakers, coaches and mentors speaking on topics ranging from Hydrogen Power to Fintech to Space Systems. It was a powerful opportunity for the attendees. Students from all over Southern California were there.

“The word is getting out about our conference, and the attendance from high schools, community colleges, and other universities continues to grow,” said Dean Jinny Rhee. “We are looking for a bigger venue for next year to be able to serve more students.”

The all-day event featured many breakout sessions, networking opportunities and intimate coaching circles, giving direct support to attendees.

“Do you hear that sound? Listen Closely,” said Debbie Meeks’86, Alum, Conference Chair and Manager, US West Coast Policy for Shell. “That’s the sound of dozens of professional women cheering you and giving you insider tips.”

Another exciting moment came when the Chair of 100+ Women Strong, who organizes and plans the event, Dorothy Benveniste presented several of our students with the 100+ Women Strong scholarship.

Mia Castillo, Stephanie Vaca, Zoe Wright and Linh Uyen Chi Vo got to meet and chat with Benveniste, who has been chair for the last four years.

Working with Rhee, and a team of passionate female engineers Benveniste has seen the event grow, working with sponsors, coaches and staff to put on the conference.

“When I was starting my career, I could have never imagined something like this,” she said. “It’s just such a wonderful event, and a wonderful day.”

Discussions and planning have already begun for next year, so be on the lookout for the 2025 BEACH Women in Engineering Conference.
