Matt Montoya is a writer and professor of screenwriting. With a background in teaching that extends from high school to community college and university levels, his entertainment industry experience has been mostly in the world of television.

Like others who mastered the art of coffee, lunch orders, and copy machines, Matt Montoya worked his way up the assistant ladder in the television world. He wrote and was staffed on CBS’s award-winning legal drama series, THE GOOD WIFE, for which he is a 3-time Writers Guild of America Award nominee with his fellow writing staff for Best Drama Series.
Montoya has also worked in new media, developing a Snapchat spinoff series for the teen mystery, DEAD GIRLS DETECTIVE AGENCY.
He has since written and assisted in production on two seasons of the Octavia Spencer-led crime drama series, TRUTH BE TOLD, for AppleTV+.
He is a member of industry unions IATSE as well as the (striking) WGA and WGA Latinx Writers Committee.
In addition to his work at CSULB, Montoya has taught screenwriting, film, and media studies at Pasadena City College along with TV writing in the John Wells Division of Writing for Screen & Television in USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.
