The Michigan State Shootings

Published February 14, 2023

This morning, many of us awakened to begin a new day with plans to go to classes and meetings. It is another day to take the opportunity to study, research, work, and be the special kind of community The Beach is every day.

For the Michigan State University community, however, today is a day of grieving. Overnight, a gunman roamed the campus, where he killed three students and wounded five others.

First and foremost, our hearts go out to the MSU family and its communities. We send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victims. We join them in mourning their losses.

This kind of violence is always tragic, but to have young people senselessly killed feels all the more heart-rending. Mass shootings have become all-too familiar to our nation, and those where students are targeted hit me and I’m sure you particularly hard.

I know that events like those at MSU can impact people far from the actual location of the shootings – and for a long time after. If you experience any ill effects related to the incidents at MSU or any other traumatic event, I encourage you to seek assistance. Our campus’ Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team stands ready to help students. For faculty and staff, the Empathia - Life Matters Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is your resource.

Please check in with your friends and family. If you see someone struggling, please help point them to resources and keep them close.

We are One Beach.

Sincerely,

Jane Close Conoley, Ph.D.
President
