For years, “No Barriers” has been a common refrain at The Beach. Today, it serves as the clarion call for a $275 million fundraising campaign to realize our promise of a transformative education, because there are No Barriers to what we can achieve together.
We find ourselves at an unprecedented juncture. The pandemic laid bare students’ vulnerabilities, with nearly 1 in 10 facing housing and/or food insecurity, 1 in 5 lacking the technology to effectively engage in online learning, and 1 in 3 seeking mental health services. There remains an extraordinary need for scholarship support for Beach students, the majority of whom are first in their families to pursue a four-year degree.
After decades of state disinvestment, recent new allocations have been directed to specific programs, challenging our ability to make necessary investments in faculty recruitment, our aging infrastructure and program innovation.
Despite these serious challenges, our admission applications and enrollment continue to climb — evidence of the popularity of and confidence in our programs. As we look to the future, now is the time to draw upon our deepest strengths to not only meet current demands, but deliver the promise of better tomorrows through big ideas.
