College of Education
For 75 years, Cal State Long Beach has prepared aspiring educators for what has been called “the essential profession, the one that makes all professions possible." The College of Education exerts a powerful influence on the quality of life in California, not only because so many specialists serving in key education roles get their start here but also because of the unique way it blends its commitment to innovation with lifelong learning, professional development and social responsibility.
Today, the College of Education has a bold vision: to build a brighter future for all California students and communities by preparing the next generation of diverse teachers, counselors and leaders to eliminate disparities in outcomes at all levels of education.
Opportunities for Investment
Next Generation of Educators
Invest in preparing the next generation of educators to design strengths-based and culturally affirming learning experiences that cultivate engagement, curiosity and belonging for racially diverse students. The Center for Clinical Practice, the first of its kind, will support the field placements of thousands of future educators, allowing them to hone their skills in urban schools.
Increase Teacher Diversity
Provide support to create new opportunities to reach, recruit, prepare and mentor students — particularly Black students — historically excluded in the teaching profession through the Teachers for Urban Schools Initiative. A teacher workforce that reflects the demographics of its student population transforms the school experience for young people, improving their attendance, attitudes, and outcomes.
Early Childhood Education
Invest in the development of an Early Childhood Credential program and create financially supported pathways for transitioning early childhood workers. This will address the demand for 11,000 newly credentialed teachers expected by California’s expansion to universal public school transitional kindergarten for all four-year-olds.
