A message on planning for Spring 2021

Dear Beach Community:

Earlier this afternoon, Chancellor Tim White shared that the California State University system will continue with a primarily virtual environment this coming spring. Arriving at a decision now is appropriate because, with fall semester now well underway, our attention has turned to planning for our next semester.

Our cautious, thoughtful approach this fall has helped keep community members healthy. It stands to reason that the most prudent course is to stay the course. So I write to affirm the chancellor's action and let you know that CSULB will remain primarily virtual in the spring.

You may feel disappointed and you may have questions. So do we. We do not yet know, for example, what our intercollegiate athletics program will ultimately look like this year. Also, Commencement this coming May will likely look different. Be assured we’ll seek wide consultation from all stakeholders moving forward. We will have great clarity on Commencement by December 1. The bottom line is our shared decision making must be guided by prevailing public-health guidelines.

I know so very well that this pandemic has challenged you over these past months, and it will continue to challenge us as a university community in the months to come. But we're up to it. We continue to make possible what, at times, felt impossible. 

You have my gratitude for coming together as One Beach, and for staying together in common purpose through the end of this pandemic.
