One Beach

Dear Beach Community:

The past few months have been challenging in many ways. We've had stark reminders of racial injustice that still exist in American society, and we proceed with only cautious optimism that our Dreamers may safely and confidently continue their studies. We've also shared a lot of information on our ongoing response to COVID-19 and our planning for the future.

Through it all, we adopted the term "One Beach" as a unifying refrain that, only together, can we tackle tough issues and do the hard work before us. As a community dedicated to serving the public good, we are presented with an opportunity to be part of solving these difficult problems. It is an opportunity we cannot afford to pass up.

We recently launched a new online space, our One Beach website, to present action plans, offer resources, affirm our deepest values, and chart our course as one university.

One area of the site, "Reuniting The Beach," is our emerging plan to safely and incrementally repopulate our physical campus. As I've said in past messages, this is complex work. We want and need to get this right, so information on Reuniting The Beach will come in phases. The website will stay current as our analysis and deep conversations lead to decisions. Our repopulation plans will be presented as a blend of policy statements and FAQs by topic area.

I encourage you to visit the site often, and we will offer reminders of new content through social-media posts, e-newsletters, homepage banners, and my routine communications with the Beach community along with those of other campus leaders.

I appreciate — more than you know — your steadfastness on repopulation efforts and the other challenges we will work through together. To me, One Beach isn't just a saying, it's the only way we move forward.
