B.I.G. earns 2nd Place at the 2019 CFAOC
CSULB’s Beach Investment Group – the honors level, undergraduate & graduate investment course – earned second place honors in the annual Chartered Financial Analyst Association of Orange County (CFAOC) Investment Strategy Competition in December, edging out regional universities UCI and CSUF. This honor includes the management of an investment portfolio totaling nearly $75,000 in 2020 and marks the resurgence of one of the top student investment programs in Southern California.
This year also marks CSULB Beach Investment Group’s 25th year of capital management. B.I.G. currently manages over $780,000 in assets for three unique endowment funds (49er SMIF Fund, Seegers Fund, CFAOC) which gives students an opportunity to actively manage real-cash portfolios.
Students are tasked with forming a broad economic outlook, which directly informs investment strategies, utilizing individual equities, fixed income securities, and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). The program is centered around students’ ability to conduct equity and credit research, presenting findings and making investment recommendations. It is a comprehensive experience, learning how to apply real investment concepts to a real-time portfolio in a consistent, thorough manner, as well as how to work cohesively as a firm both in and out of class. The B.I.G is open to students in both the Evening MBA and MS Finance programs.
