Standing With Our Dreamers
Dear Beach Family,
Today marks the second anniversary of the rescinding of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This rescission, if upheld by the United States Supreme Court, could substantially impact our student body – and the nation – in very difficult ways. The next and final step will be oral arguments before the court on November 12.
If the court sides with Dreamers, our students won't have to study, work and live in fear. We hope the justices understand that DACA has helped undocumented students not only build pathways to their own success, but continue to strengthen our institutions and communities. From personal experience, I see how our Dreamers contribute to the life, diversity and vibrancy of our campus, and I know the stories of these alumni who have gone on to do remarkable things.
Cal State Long Beach is enthusiastically joining with the entire California State University system in signing an amicus brief supporting DACA before the Supreme Court. We want all our students, whatever their citizenship status to live and learn with no anxiety and uncertainty. No one belongs in the shadows. So, I say this without reservation: The Beach will fight to secure the promise each Dreamer represents.
Please join me in helping to turn the tide. Some examples include sending a message to your local news media outlet or elected official calling for DACA's support; using social media to raise awareness of the matter; or organizing a rally/informational meeting. To that end, on October 22, numerous colleges and universities across the nation are expected to participate in the "I Stand with Immigrants Day of Action." I encourage you – whether as part of alumni group, our faculty and staff, a student club or as an individual – to let the world know we value the role immigrants play on our campus and in the story of our great country.
I deeply appreciate your time and consideration on this issue. A positive outcome at the Supreme Court ensures that The Beach remains a place where diversity flourishes and is valued, learning and scholarship are unfettered, and personal and institutional growth continue.
Sincerely,
Jane Close Conoley
