I practically grew up in the shadow of the Walter Pyramid so it was no surprise to anyone when I chose Cal State Long Beach to be my university of choice. My first few semesters were a struggle trying to adjust to a new college lifestyle. I felt like I had lost so much in the transition from high school to college. When I joined Beta Alpha Psi & Accounting Society I instantly found a sense of community which transformed me into a college student and allowed me to be successful.

I am truly grateful for the professors and faculty who dedicate their time in helping all students achieve their dreams. They have taught me that a fulfilling college education is more than a diploma or getting a job offer. A truly enriching educational career is building oneself to be better equipped to make a difference for our community.

In high school, I worked hard to maintain high grades. I had the opportunity to take an accounting class which introduced me to the basics. This class opened the door for many opportunities which I took full advantage of. As deadlines approached for college applications, I felt excited about the next chapter of my life.

I wanted to ensure I made the right decision before entering college and I discovered that Cal State Long Beach had a great business program. Entering as a freshman accounting major, I instantly knew I had made the right choice. My parents always encouraged me to do well in college. I devoted time to my studies and got involved in several student organizations.

I have been so amazed by the lengths which faculty and alumni take in order to help develop college students. But I firmly believe that to receive this, one needs to be active in pursuing their interests. My dream was to find a new way that allowed business students to pursue their dreams and to network with professionals from a variety of industries. Starting the Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA) CSULB Chapter fulfilled that dream for me.

Starting a new organization is akin to starting one’s own business. It comes with major challenges and is something I had to devote my life too. But the rewards of this have been astounding. Not only have I seen peers receive job offers through this organization, but it has attracted even more companies to our university who never recruited at CSULB in the past.

By utilizing the skills I have gained throughout my time at The Beach, I have accepted a full-time offer from Deloitte & Touche LLP in the LA office. In addition, I plan to spend the summer following graduation studying for the CPA exams. Ideally, I want to learn as much as I can in public accounting and use these skills to further my career in the business world.

I am truly thankful for this amazing opportunity and look forward to growing in the accounting profession. But more importantly, I look forward to giving back to my school. Being an active alumnus is my goal as I transition into the work force. I have been fortunate to build relationships with so many people throughout my time here, and now is my chance to make a difference for others.

Throughout my journey at CSULB, I have truly loved my experience here and count each day as precious to me. Thank you to all the faculty and fellow students.
