New Beach EDGE Programs Make their Debut Splash this Fall 2025
Beach Expedited Degrees in Graduate Education (EDGE) merge existing baccalaureate and master's degree programs in similar disciplines into a single pathway. Beach EDGE launched in Fall 2024 with nine programs to start. CSULB is happy to announce that an additional eight new programs will launch Fall 2025:

Professor Awarded Grant to Expand Ethnic Studies
Theresa Gregor has been awarded an Advancing and Expanding Ethnic Studies grant, part of a CSU-wide initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation to strengthen ethnic studies programs. Gregor, an assistant professor and program director of American Indian Studies, will use the grant to develop new academic pathways that integrate ethnic studies with gender and sexuality studies — broadening opportunities for students to engage in intersectional research and experiential learning.
CSULB Receives $10M Gift to Establish Master’s Degree Program in Translation, Interpreting
Cal State Long Beach’s Clorinda Donato Center for Global Romance Languages and Translation Studies has received a $10 million gift to establish a Master of Arts degree program in translation and interpreting by fall 2026.
Professor Wins CNSM Student Council Mayfield Award
Chemistry Assistant Professor Julie Wahlman recently won the CNSM Student Council Mayfield Award, an annual award given by the students for exceptional teaching. Dr. Wahlman, who began teaching at CSULB in 2022, was honored at a gala thrown by the Student Council.
BIG Students Take First Place in Two Competitions
For the first time ever, the College of Business Beach Investment Group (BIG) students came in first place in both the CFAOC RFP competition and the CFAOC Investment Research Challenge! Huge congratulations to the five participating students, and special thanks to Bridgett England for her mentorship of the students.

The Annual Women’s Research Colloquium is Almost Here
The 2025 Women’s Research Colloquium is just around the corner! This event, sponsored by the President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) and Women’s Gender and Equity Center (WGEC), provides a platform for faculty, staff, and students to present research conducted by women or relating to the issues concerning the experiences of women. This event will take place on March 21 from 9am – 12pm at the Anatol Center and virtually via Zoom. Please register to attend.
Commuting Made Easier with BeachGO
Parking and Transportation Services recently launched BeachGO, a comprehensive commute-planning Android and iOS app that provides step-by-step navigation for your travel to/from our campus and rewards you for your sustainable choices. Whether you prefer carpooling, biking, taking public transit (bus/light rail), or any other mode of transportation, BeachGO helps you to:
- Plan your trips according to your commuting behaviors.
- Find carpool partners based on your preferences (route, time of day, gender, language preference, smoker/non-smoker, etc.)
- Track your carbon savings and earn rewards based on how much you save.
- Earn rewards and enter raffles hosted by CSULB!
Opportunities to Help Make Day at The Beach A Success
Day at The Beach is a campus-wide event for newly admitted students and their families that provides a first-look at college programs, student organizations, academic resources, popular facilities, and more. Faculty and staff can volunteer for a shift to help to welcome these students and show them the best we have to offer. Day at The Beach is scheduled for April 12. Please check with your appropriate administrator before signing up to participate.

Dr. Claudia Huang’s Upcoming Book Announced
The Department of Human Development announced the release of Dr. Claudia Huang's book, Dancing for Their Lives, which explores the lives of retired Chinese women who gather in parks and public squares to dance in response to economic and cultural transformations.
Get Ready for the Week of Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The 4th annual Week of Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity (RSCA) will be held April 14-18, 2025, at CSULB. This event showcases some of the amazing work of students, staff, and faculty, emphasizing the immense value and importance these projects have on campus and within local communities. Attendees can meet with presenters, engage in dialogue regarding various scientific and social topics, and network with members from various disciplines across CSULB. Week of RSCA encourages participation in sessions both within and outside one’s own discipline.
Applications Open for College Corps @ The Beach
College Corps @ The Beach is now accepting applications for the 2025-26 academic year. This program works with campus and community partners to place students in two-semester paid internships. It is open to all CSULB undergraduates from any major who are passionate about working with nonprofit organizations and eager to try new things. Students with financial needs, as determined by the 2025-26 FAFSA or CADAA, will be prioritized. Dreamers are encouraged to apply and can seek assistance from the Dream Success Center. Applications are due on April 14, 2025, but will remain open until all internships are filled.
Creating Inclusive Classrooms through Universal Design for Learning
March 17 | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
The modern classroom is more diverse than ever before, and educators are more invested than ever in understanding how to support students. This workshop introduces the three pillars of Universal Design for Learning that are the hallmarks of the new era of teaching. Presented by BMAC and Landmark College, which specializes in higher education for neurodivergent students. Workshop from 10:00 – 11:30 AM. Q&A with BMAC from 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM.

The Future U: Building Legacy
University Student Union 2028
The Future U project is transforming the University Student Union (USU) into a modern, dynamic space that better serves the evolving needs of our campus community. As part of this project, construction will begin April 14, 2025 on the Friendship Walk Stairs, enhancing ADA accessibility and connectivity between key areas of campus. Additionally, essential student services and resources are beginning their relocation to alternative locations around campus to ensure uninterrupted support during construction.
An Evening with Ruby Bridges: A Historic Conversation
Faculty and staff are invited to An Evening with Ruby Bridges, whose courageous role in school integration at just six years old helped shape the civil rights movement. Bridges’ experiences and lifelong advocacy for equity and education continue to resonate in today’s discussions on social justice and access.
This event will take place on Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.
Faculty Professional Development Program: Improve Your Online Course
April 2 | 8:30 am - 4 pm
Join Academic Technology Services during Spring Break for this day-long, hands-on session designed to introduce faculty participants to the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric. Quality Matters is an international organization that supports a collaborative approach to course design and review among faculty peers. In this session, faculty will review their online courses and use the Rubric, an established set of research-based standards, to guide their diagnosis and planning for course improvements. Participants who complete the course will receive an official certificate from Quality Matters. This event is in-person at Academic Services room 235.
