Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) 2019

Published May 21, 2019

Another successful season of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the College of Business concluded on April 15th.

Since its inception 15 years ago, VITA has consistently served our campus, Long Beach, Orange county, and greater Los Angeles community. In addition to the service for our communities, the VITA program also gives accountancy students a unique hands on experience preparing tax returns through training provided by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and various Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). For the 2018-2019 year, the final numbers from the IRS indicate a total of 1,809 tax returns prepared during the 2019 tax season, serving at 5 locations in addition to two Saturday tax days and financial literacy fairs held on the CSULB campus. This year was especially impactful as we crossed 1 million for the first time in state and federal refunds, totaling $1,087,807 in tax refunds to clients served by VITA.

A program of this magnitude could not survive without the outside support of our generous sponsors. A huge thank you goes out to the Union Bank Foundation and The State of California 2018 Cal EITC Free Tax Preparation Assistance Grant to CSU5 for sponsoring VITA for the 2018-2019 school year.
