Certificate in French Language Proficiency
This policy statement was recommended by the Academic Senate on April 6, 2017 and approved by the President on June 6, 2017.
Program Description
The Certificate in French Language consists of 12-25 units, of which 9 units must be at the upper-division level. The number of lower-division units will depend upon the amount of French studied previously in high school or college, since students with prior study of French may enter with advanced standing. In addition to 9 upper-division units, students must pass an externally administered oral proficiency test.
Requirements (12-25 units)
Take one of the following courses:
FREN 100A Fundamentals of French for Spanish Speakers (4)
Prerequisite: Two semesters of college Spanish or 3 years of high school or be a heritage or native speaker of Spanish.
FREN 101A Fundamentals of French (4)
Prerequisite/Corequisite: Any Foundation course.
Take one of the following courses:
FREN 100B Fundamentals of French for Spanish Speakers (4)
Prerequisites: FREN 100A; or FREN 101A with 2 semesters of college Spanish or 3 years of high school Spanish; or be a heritage or native speakers of Spanish.
FREN 101B Fundamentals of French (4)
Prerequisite/Corequisite: FREN 101A or two years of high school French or equivalent.
Corequisite: Any Foundation course.
Take either:
FREN 200 Intermediate French for Spanish Speakers (6)
Prerequisites: FREN 100B or FREN 101B or 3 years of high school French and 2 years of college Spanish or be a heritage or native speaker of Spanish.
OR
FREN 201A Intermediate French (4)
Prerequisite: FREN 101B or three years of high school French or equivalent, GE Foundation requirement (or entering competency equivalent to FREN 101B and completion of concurrent enrollment in at least one Foundation course).
AND
FREN 201B Intermediate French (4)
Prerequisite: FREN 201A or four years of high school French or equivalent, GE Foundation requirement (or entering competency equivalent to FREN 201A and completion or concurrent enrollment in at least one Foundation course).
Take the following courses:
FREN 312 Advanced French Grammar & Composition (6)
Prerequisite: FREN 201B or equivalent.
FREN 314 Advanced Conversation (3)
Prerequisite: FREN 214 or consent of instructor.
Electives (students with advanced language standing must take one elective to meet the 12 unit minimum for this certificate):
FREN 320, FREN 333, FREN 334, FREN 411, FREN 414
