As a national expert, Jana Echevarria has authored and co-authored numerous books on helping teachers provide more comprehensible instruction to English learners. Recently, she co-authored publisher Macmillan/McGraw-Hill’s California Treasures, a K-6 reading and language arts program.

She is the Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners principal investigator. In 2011, she traveled to Tetovo, Macedonia, on a Fulbright grant. From 1993-06, she was a Department of Educational Psychology, Administration and Counseling faculty member, serving as chair from 2002-04.

Her teaching experience includes work in special education, English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual programs. She taught ESL and second language acquisition at universities in Taiwan and Mexico and conducted research in Spain. Her work on the educational model, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), led to its use across the U.S. and in several countries.

Echevarria has served on several boards, including the National Center for Learning Disabilities, Grace Christian School and Opportunity Schools. Presently, she sits on the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning advisory panel.

As a proud CSULB alumna, she served on the 2010-11 NCAA Division I Athletics Certification Committee and continues service with the College of Education Development Committee.

Echevarria attends numerous CSULB sports events with her husband, alumnus Charles (Casey) Vose (1971, B.A., political science), and they have four children: Paige and Dillon Ratleff and Lindsay and Caitlin Vose.
