Sustainable Transportation

Dear Campus Community,

Our campus is a leader in sustainability, and promoting pro-environmental actions is a top priority at The Beach. But reaching our ambitious goal of climate neutrality will require every one of us to take action. One of the best ways to do this is by using alternative transportation for your campus commute. This will be even more important in the coming semester, given the ongoing campus improvement project at West Campus Circle.

As I’ve mentioned before, vehicle commutes to campus create over 50 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions at CSULB. By choosing one of our many sustainable commute options, you can quickly reduce your carbon footprint, improve your physical health, and even save money. And, you’ll be helping our campus make a difference for future generations.

Now, here’s the good part! Students, faculty and staff can enjoy unlimited free rides on all Long Beach Transit buses with the U-Pass TAP program. We also offer complimentary shuttle services both on and off campus. The Los Coyotes and Anaheim Street shuttle routes provide free transportation to campus from two off-campus areas, just by showing your CSULB ID.

Zimride is a rideshare network created specifically to help students and employees form carpools by matching them with other individuals heading to/from campus from their area. If you need a car, there are seven Zipcars on campus that can be rented either by the hour or by the day.

For the fall semester, we are in the process of forming new vanpools, which are a convenient ridesharing option for those of you who live more than 15 miles from campus. You may have also seen the new solar Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations being installed. These stations will drastically expand our EV infrastructure on campus and provide an environmentally friendly way for commuters to charge their Electric Vehicles.

If you have questions about your commute or would like to discuss your options, professionals in the Sustainable Transportation Office provide personalized travel planning assistance. I encourage you to contact them at 562.985.RIDE or ride@csulb.edu. Learn more about sustainabletransportation by visiting www.csulb.edu/ride.
