College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
A national leader in integrating undergraduate research and programs, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is home to notable laboratories and to internationally recognized teacher scholars focused on providing world-class student-research opportunities.
CNSM researchers advance scientific knowledge in a wide range of disciplines and mentor students historically underrepresented in STEM fields. By championing a student-centered approach, CNSM seeks to diversify and expand the pipeline of talented scientists and mathematicians prepared to meet evolving workforce demands and develop solutions to society’s most pressing problems.
Opportunities for Investment
Student Research Fund
Support 400 students per semester in faculty-mentored research labs while creating a new curriculum model making authentic research experiences available to all students in key lower-division courses. This will result in significantly improving student retention in STEM and enhancing the ability of CNSM students to address urgent research questions, find meaningful job prospects and compete for admission to selective medical schools and Ph.D. programs.
Competitive Edge Fund
Provide support to ensure that CSULB student scientists graduate experienced in using the technology of the future. The pace of technological change is unrelenting and expensive. When our students train on state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation in up-to-date facilities, they gain a competitive edge in jobs and graduate school admissions.
Urban Coast Institute
Establish a multi-disciplinary institute focused on balancing societal needs with environmental and ecological concerns. A nexus of research, education and collaboration across disciplines, colleges, faculty and students, the institute will contribute to the development of healthy, productive and resilient coastal ecosystems and urban communities by finding solutions to environmental risks and impacts.
