Earth Science
Why Study Earth Science
If you want to help save our planet and the people that live on it, Earth Science might be the home for you. Earth scientists protect water resources, help prepare for climate change, and plan for natural disasters.
We enjoy working outdoors, driven by our curiosity about the Earth's complex geological and environmental systems. In our department, you'll collaborate closely with fellow students on numerous field trips, fostering both teamwork and independence in the field.
The job market for earth scientists is thriving; many of our graduates quickly secure positions in industry or government, while others pursue advanced studies.
Earth scientists make a difference in people's lives.
Earth Science Programs
We offer two undergraduate Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. The Geology degree focuses more on subsurface rocks and water (lithosphere and hydrosphere) and is designed to lead to a license as a Professional Geologist and the Certified Hydrogeologist in California. The Earth Systems degree takes a broader view of the planet, exploring also the atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere.
Our graduate Master of Science (M.S.) program helps students follow their passion in a more focused area of Earth Science, working in close collaboration with one or more faculty members. The program culminates in a research-based thesis and often a published journal paper.
Local Geological Diversity
CSU Long Beach is on a beautiful campus located 10 minutes from the beach, one hour from the mountains, and two hours from the desert!
Our Southern California location offers rich geological diversity for hands-on study and research. We enjoy the best weather in the world and the choice to either spend a day surfing, hiking in the mountains, or catching a music festival in LA.
