What is a Beach XP Peer Mentor?

A Beach XP Peer Mentor is a dedicated student leader who supports first-time, first-year students as they navigate their college journey. By fostering connections and offering guidance, Peer Mentors help create a welcoming, inclusive community where students can thrive academically and socially. Through regular meetings, activities, and mentorship, Peer Mentors play a pivotal role in enhancing the college experience, encouraging personal growth, and building lasting support networks within the Beach XP program.

  • Design and Facilitate Activities: Develop and participate in scheduled activity hours for Beach XP students, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. 
  • Event Planning and Organization: Organize and lead engaging events that enhance the student experience and encourage community-building. 
  • Communication: Keep students informed about upcoming events, resources, and program updates through various communication channels. 
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Beach XP faculty to support students' academic progress and address any concerns that may arise. 
  • Engagement: Actively participate in social activities organized by Beach XP and Campus Partners, promoting involvement and camaraderie. 
  • Monitoring and Support: Track students' progress and well-being, providing timely support and updates to the program director and staff as needed. 
  • Peer Support Networks: Facilitate the development of peer support networks, helping students build strong academic and social connections. 
  • Direct Interaction with Students: This position is an in-person only and will require for you to interact and support students/staff throughout the day or during events. 

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA (undergraduates) or 3.25 cumulative GPA (graduate students). 
  • Must be a current Long Beach State undergraduate or graduate student. 
  • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at Long Beach State. 
  • Must have a desire to build relationships, willing to network and open communicate with all program stakeholders.
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, enthusiastic, and motivated.
  • Must be able to work with a culturally diverse campus community. 
  • Must display effective communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and be ready to present documentation for work eligibility to HR upon hiring.

Compensation for first-time Beach XP mentors is California minimum wage. Beach XP peer mentors may only work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic periods and do not qualify for overtime.

  1. Attend a Beach XP Peer Mentor Information Session

    Begin your journey to becoming a Peer Mentor by attending a Beach XP Peer Mentor Information Session. In this session, you'll learn about the role's responsibilities and expectations and gain insight into the full application and interview process. If you’re interested in joining but can’t attend, you may also fill out our Beach XP Peer Mentor Interest Form to stay connected. This is informational session is not a requirement to apply but it is strongly recommended. 

     

  2. Submit the Beach XP Peer Mentor Application 

    After attending an information session, complete the Beach XP Peer Mentor Application via Microsoft Forms. This includes attaching your resume and a personal statement. In your personal statement, answer the following prompt: Why do you want to become a Beach XP Peer Mentor, and what personal experiences have shaped your desire to support the first-year experience?

     

  3. Participate in a Group Interview 

    Selected applicants will be invited to a group interview, where you'll have the chance to showcase your teamwork and communication skills. This interactive setting allows us to see how you engage with peers and approach common challenges within the Peer Mentor role.

     

  4. Receive Your Decision 

    After the group interview, our team will review applications and notify you of your status. You’ll receive an email informing you whether you've been selected to join the Beach XP Peer Mentor team. Successful applicants will be provided with next steps to officially join our program and prepare for their mentorship journey.

What should applicants know about the Peer Mentor role? 

Peer Mentors work during the Fall and Spring semesters, facilitating activity hours, planning events, and engaging students to create a supportive, inclusive environment. Beach XP’s mission is to help first-year students connect to campus resources and foster a sense of belonging. 

 

What are the qualifications for the Peer Mentor position? 

Applicants must be in good academic standing and be continuing CSULB students at the time of application. 

 

When and where are applications due? 

Applications are submitted via Microsoft Forms and are available in the Spring semester. Specific deadlines will be announced on our website and shared in information sessions. 

 

Can I apply to be a Peer Mentor if I’m graduating or applying to graduate school?

Graduating students are eligible to apply with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Current undergraduate students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. 

 

How will shifts be scheduled? 

Shifts will be posted a month in advance on Microsoft Teams according to each mentor’s semester schedule. Peer Mentors are encouraged to communicate their availability well in advance to help with the scheduling process. 

 

What type of training is provided for Peer Mentors?

Peer Mentors will receive training on the types of activity hours offered at Beach XP, how to facilitate these sessions, effective student engagement strategies, and daily responsibilities. The training is designed to ensure mentors feel confident and well-prepared to support students. 

 

How are Peer Mentors compensated? 

First-time Peer Mentors are compensated at minimum wage, with monthly pay issued on the 15th of the month following their start date.
