Day 1: The Beginning and Day 2: Lectures

June 12, 2012

Day 1

On day 1 I was too busy to post on here so I am posting it on Day 2 about Day 1. Day 1 was very hectic as I had to drive to Long Beach (though I shouldn’t be complaining because some people woke up at like 3am to catch a plane), download 2394820 programs and softwares (ok maybe like 10), and getting settled in the dorm. It was exciting to meet with so many people. I am excited to work with the professors, graduate assistants and other interns.

Day 2

I can’t remember the last time waking up at 7 am! Ever since I began college I have been waking up so late in the morning that my afternoons felt like mornings. Anyway after waking up at 7am and starting lectures at 9am (which I also can’t remember last time taking a 9am class) I thought I would be yawning  all day but turns out I was just fine.  I was very tired by 5pm but I had a great day.

A brief overview of what I learned today.

(9am – around 12pm) lecture with Dr. Lipo about science, theory, knowledge, bias, data recovery, and little about how GPS works.

After hearing Dr. Lipo’s lecture I learned that saying that I was going to Kauai to “collect data” was wrong and that “generate data” is the correct term. Generate is correct because there is always bias in the way we obtain data. (to summarize it very very short and easy)

12pm – 1pm LUNCH!!!

1pm – 4:45pm Dr. Lee’s lecture about remote sensing and satellite. Also a ERDAS exercise taught by a graduate assistant Mike Ferris (I think that was his last name…sorry if I got it wrong!

Heres a pic of one of the maps that I worked on today.
